Pre-Marriage Counseling: Why Would You Bother?

Pre-marriage counseling is very important for every engaged couple. You may only need to attend for one to two sessions, or you might feel that you need to attend a few more sessions than that, depending on the issues you’d like to explore.

By attending counseling sessions, you can make sure that you and your fiancée are on the same page as to what you each expect from the impending marriage.

Some issues to think about when you attend a pre-marriage counseling session may be money, sex, your family backgrounds, religion (if you follow different religions), how you communicate with each other and how to deal with any differences of opinion you may have from time to time.

Pre-marriage counseling can be a great way to learn how to deal with any conflict that arises in the relationship and how to keep communication between the two of you open and honest.

Attending pre-marriage counseling can also help your marriage have a better chance of success as compared to couples who don’t attend pre-marriage counseling. And you do want your marriage to be a long and happy one, don’t you?

Conflicts over money can be a relationship killer, and is one of the main reasons that many couples split up. So if you attend pre-marriage counseling, make sure that the topic of money is discussed and you’re aware of each other’s attitudes towards it. For example, one person may enjoy spending most of their money on luxuries and don’t have a problem living pay check to pay check, while the other person in the relationship may enjoy living frugally and saving as much money as they can as a safeguard against the future.

At your first session, the counselor will usually take a brief history of your background and any prior relationships each of you have had. You may also be given assignments and role-playing activities to do, in order to enhance your relationship, as well as discussion of any issues that are important to you.

So if you’re getting married, why not take the time to attend a pre-marriage counseling session? You and your fiancée may be very glad that you did.
